Some fishermen consider bluefin tuna to be dinosaurs still swimming in the ocean. Atlantic bluefin tuna have very few natural predators. Weighing in at over 1000 pounds in some cases, these fish face few natural threats. Orca whales and sharks are generally their largest predators. ICCAT (International Committee for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) is a coalition of most of the countries that harvest Atlantic bluefin and each fall sets a total quota and divides that into shares for each country.  The US is a member of ICCAT and strives to stay within the quota allowed, but not every country is as committed to the ICCAT quotas and there are excess harvests.
